Pan-European POPs protocol to enter force
A pan-European protocol aimed at eliminating use of specified persistent organic pollutants (POPs) will take effect on 23 October after reaching the required number of ratifications. The protocol's 16 parties will hold their first official meeting in December, according to its sponsoring body the UN economic commission for Europe (UN/ECE). The similar but globally applicable Stockholm POPs convention agreed in 2001 has so far been ratified by 33 states compared with its target for entry into force of 50. See UN/ECE press release, and Stockholm convention.
