EU thumbs-down for climate state aid
The European Commission has defined climate policy-related financial support in Sweden and Italy as illegal state aid. The EU executive ruled that an exemption from Swedish energy taxes granted to some manufacturing firms had lasted longer than the ten years allowed under EU rules. It also rejected Italian public investment in a cogeneration project near Rome, arguing that though the investment plan complies with state aid rules the utility involved has not reimbursed earlier state aid deemed illegal by the European court of justice.
