Danish organic waste LCA study released
Denmark's environmental protection agency has released a life-cycle environmental assessment of household organic waste treatment options that contributed to a government decision in May not to promote a significant shift from incineration towards composting or anaerobic digestion (EED 12/05/03). Overall environmental impacts of digestion and incineration in Denmark are about equal, the study concludes, while composting does much worse. The Danish research comes as the European Commission is preparing proposals for an EU biowaste directive, which some experts argue should favour source separation of waste over incineration.
