British groups try to repel US "ghost ships"
British NGOs are campaigning to prevent the expected arrival of 13 old US navy vessels to the north-east coast of England for scrapping. Backed by Friends of the Earth, local group Impact Teeside is calling for the ships to be broken up in America. Environmentalists have long urged curbs on exports of ships for scrapping in developing countries (EED 20/06/03). This case is rare in that both the exporting and importing states are members of the rich country OECD group. See Impact Teeside and media briefing.
