Consultation on UK waste trading scheme
Britain's environment ministry has released detailed proposals for a unique system of tradable allowances in municipal waste landfilling due to start operating in England next year. Separate but similar schemes are to be introduced in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The government indicated its intention last year to use trading to enable the UK to meet EU targets for cutting levels of biodegradable waste dumping (EED 15/11/02). The consultation closes on 21 November. See press release and consultation paper.
