French nuclear waste research reviewed
The OECD Nuclear energy agency has praised a French government study on the feasibility of disposing of high-level radioactive waste in clay geological formations. The study's "overall scientific basis, modelling capabilities and safety approach were found to be in line with international best practice", it concludes. The study is one of several intended to feed into a final report in 2005, on the basis of which the government is due to decide on long-term options in 2006 (EED 05/02/98).
