Late protection of shellfish waters chastised

Ireland's failure to fully comply with an EU directive on the protection of designated shellfish waters by a July 2000 deadline has led to condemnation by the European court of justice. Ireland finally moved to apply the directive's requirements to all designated shellfish freshwaters in 2001, too late to prevent a court case from proceeding (EED 18/10/01). The shellfish waters directive is one of several being replaced in 2013 by relevant provisions in the 2000 water framework directive. See judgement in case C-67/02.
