EU fish subsidies "environmentally harmful"
Half of all EU fishing subsidies received by Spain are environmentally harmful, green group WWF claimed on Monday. EU funding has played "a fundamental role" in the decline of fish stocks, the group said. In a study, WWF calculated that 48% of the nearly €1.5bn of funding enjoyed by Spain from 1994 to 2001 had a negative environmental impact, 36% a positive environmental impact and 15% was neutral. The group reiterated demands for more transparency over projects to receive EU funding and more measurement of environmental impacts (EED 27/11/02). See press release and report.
