Toxic waste treatment law approved
Portugal's council of ministers on Thursday approved a long-awaited law setting up two integrated treatment centres for toxic waste recycling, recovery and disposal. The government has said the law "guarantees excellent protection of public health and the environment", avoids waste exports and minimises landfilling. The ministry has yet to decide the location of the two plants, which will not be in operation before 2005. The law is the first concrete step in Portugal's new toxic waste management policy, following years of political controversy (EED 07/02/03). See waste institute.
