Companies showcase cleaner motor fuels
A development programme for motor fuels based initially on natural gas and eventually on biomass was announced in Brussels on Tuesday by car firm Volkswagen and oil company Shell. The initiative was welcomed by EU transport and energy commissioner Loyola de Palacio. Gas to liquid (GTL) fuels are substantially cleaner than their oil-based equivalent. If biomass sourcing can be developed they will also offer much lower carbon dioxide emissions. The firms say the project is a stepping stone to biomass-produced hydrogen transport fuels.
