Italy chooses radioactive waste burial site
The Italian government has announced a single site for deep burial of all medium and high-level radioactive waste, promising to make it operational by 2008. Situated in the southern region of Basilicata, the site had been on a shortlist of 20 being considered (EED 07/07/03). About 80,000 cubic metres of waste are eventually due to be disposed of at the depository. The timetable for its completion puts Italy well in advance of controversial radioactive waste management targets for EU states proposed by the European Commission in January (EED 31/01/03).
