Fourth year of phthalates emergency beckons
EU-wide prohibition of six phthalate softeners in certain toys has been renewed for a 16th three-month period running to 20 February 2004. The emergency order is now set to reach its fourth birthday in December while Europe still struggles to decide on a long-term policy. Its latest renewal was adopted on 18 November and should appear in the EU official journal in the coming days. Phthalate manufacturers have been stepping up pressure for the EU the rescind the ban, at least for DINP, the main phthalate used in toys (EED 21/08/03).
