Italy in U-turn on nuclear waste disposal
Days after announcing its decision to store medium and high-level radioactive waste in the southern town of Scanzano, the Italian government has been forced by outraged local residents into an embarrassing climbdown (EED 19/11/03). The cabinet said on Thursday that the choice of a deep burial site for nuclear waste, to be completed by 2008, was now once again under review. An expert committee is expected to be set up to advise on the most appropriate location for a permanent depository. See press release.
