EU transport council still split over sanctions

EU transport ministers remain divided over a legislative proposal on criminal sanctions against ship-source polluters, it emerged from a council meeting on Friday. Opposition to sanctions being imposed without unanimous support from member states remained strong (EED 10/10/03). A political agreement was reached on amended guidelines for the Trans-European transport network (Ten), to adapt them to enlargement. Progress was also made on adding new tasks to the remit of the European maritime safety agency, ensuring interoperability among electronic toll systems, and setting up an EU-wide framework for road charging.
