Spanish firms press again on Kyoto target

Spanish industry representatives held a private meeting with economy minister Rodrigo Rato on Wednesday to further their campaign for renegotiation of Spain's Kyoto target for limiting greenhouse gas emissions (EED 28/10/03). Employers' federation CEOE calculates that, with national emissions already 33% above the 1990 base year compared with a 2008-12 target of +15%, industry will face an emissions credit bill worth 5% of Spain's GDP. It argues that Spain miscalculated emissions levels when it signed up to the EU's "burden sharing" deal on national Kyoto targets in 1998. See CEOE.
