Waste prevention "an unexpected success"

A collection of waste prevention case studies has revealed "far more successful initiatives than expected," according to the Copenhagen-based European topic centre on waste and material flows. The findings were "a pleasant surprise", the centre said, and should provide useful input to an EU waste prevention and recycling strategy due next year. In a first sketch of the strategy published in May the European Commission said many waste prevention initiatives had failed and concluded that it was too early to propose concrete measures or targets for preventing waste (EED 26/05/03).
