Ministers agree 2004 EU fishing quotas

After 30 hours of talks, EU fisheries ministers agreed 2004 catch quotas on Friday morning. As in previous years, limits have been set at more generous levels than recommended by the bloc's scientific advisors - who this year urged a complete halt to fishing of certain species to prevent a possible collapse in stocks (EED 20/10/03). Only Germany and Sweden held out for limits in line with scientific advice. Ministers also adopted the EU's first long-term recovery plans for endangered fish species. See reactions from European Commission, WWF, plus UK, Irish and Swedish governments.
