Greenpeace Spain defends Kyoto climate treaty
Greenpeace Spain has made defending the Kyoto protocol its top priority for 2004. The NGO said that Spain's compliance was "in grave danger", citing an intense campaign against Kyoto by Spanish business groups (EED 08/12/03). It also blamed Spanish EU commissioner Loyola De Palacio, who recently suggested that Europe should think again before implementing Kyoto should Russia not ratify the protocol. "Kyoto is a thermometer of governments' commitments to the preservation of resources," said Greenpeace. "Compliance is a challenge but retreat should not be permitted." See press release.
