Study sparks row over safety of farmed salmon
Publication in scientific journal Science of an extensive US study showing that farmed Atlantic salmon contains much higher levels of organochlorine compounds than wild Pacific salmon has sparked a new food scare. Scientists appear split over whether the health benefits of eating salmon are outweighed by any increased cancer risk associated with contaminated fish. Environmental group Friends of the Earth called for "clearer labelling" of food products and for tougher legislation protecting the environment from persistent chemicals' build-up.
