Commission backs paints directive deal
The European Commission has come out in support of a ministerial agreement on draft EU rules to limit organic solvent emissions from paints and varnishes. The council of ministers formally issued its common position on 7 January. The Commission's support strengthens the probability of the legislation being swiftly finalised. MEPs are due to begin their second reading in February (EED 05/01/04). EU governments have already accepted 26 out of parliament's 40 first-reading amendments, while also clarifying the directive's purpose and scope, the Commission notes in an opinion on the common position.
