"Urgent action" needed on biodiversity
EU environment commissioner Margot Wallström has urged Europe to "move from words to deeds" to reduce growing threats to biodiversity. Speaking at a conference in Madrid in the run-up to UN biodiversity convention talks in Kuala Lumpur next month, Ms Wallström said the EU should prioritise the Natura 2000 conservation network and continue to shift agricultural and fisheries policies towards habitat protection. She also said the Irish presidency would develop a 2010 delivery plan to identify key actions needed to meet targets set in the EU's 1998 biodiversity strategy (EED 04/02/98). See speech.
