London mayor calls for greener road pricing
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone has criticised draft EU rules on infrastructure charging for heavy lorries as a potential threat to urban congestion charging schemes like that operating in the UK capital. If the revised "eurovignette" directive principle of charging only for the cost of building and maintaining roads were extended to cars "it would make the London congestion charge and schemes like it illegal", Mr Livingstone wrote in EU political magazine E!Sharp. The European Commission's eurovignette proposals are being debated in Brussels (EED 07/01/04).
