Sweden to sue over EU paraquat authorisation

The Swedish government will ask the European court of justice to overturn an EU decision to reauthorise use of the herbicide paraquat, it announced on Thursday. EU governments agreed the move last autumn, against the wishes of Sweden, Austria, Denmark and Finland, where paraquat is banned (EED 06/10/03). The measure was published as a Commission directive in December (EED 11/12/03). "In my view, paraquat is an unacceptable pesticide that has no place in sustainable agriculture," commented Swedish environment minister Lena Sommestad. See press release.
