Trittin urges support for packaging law reform
German environment minister Jürgen Trittin has urged the Bundesrat, or upper house of parliament, to approve a reform of rules on packaging deposits. Mr Trittin warned that unless the new system was agreed then deposits under controversial existing rules could soon have to be extended to cover one-way packaging for fruit juice, wine and spirits. Under the government's proposals, packaging for these drinks would be excluded from deposits. The plan has sparked opposition from Germany's EU partners as well as from some states (EED 10/10/03).
