"Weak" forest certification schemes attacked
Brussels-based Forest protection group Fern has attacked the large majority of environmental certification schemes for forestry products, labelling the NGO-backed Forest stewardship council (FSC) as still "the only credible scheme in operation". In a new report Fern compares eight certification schemes, updating and expanding a report it published in 2001 (EED 22/05/01). The majority of schemes simply certify status quo practices and fail tests of independence, transparency and social rights, it concludes. See press release and report.
