Czech waste import ban comes under pressure
A Czech ban on virtually all waste imports came under renewed pressure last week in parliament. Though an amendment tabled by Tomas Hasil of the opposition Civic Democrat party was defeated, it drew 45 votes in favour, up from 11 the last time the issue was voted. The amendment would have allowed waste imports for incineration at plants with heat recovery. Environmental group Hnuti Duha claimed that Mr Hasil's amendment was partly targeted at helping a financially struggling incinerator at Liberec, a city near the German border, which he represents.
