EU food agency backs GM oilseed rape
The European food safety authority (Efsa) has backed a genetically modified (GM) oilseed rape, deeming it "as safe as conventional" varieties for import, processing and feed use. This is the second time the authority has given its opinion on a proposal to market a GM crop since it was set up in 2002. Several more opinions are in the pipeline. Monsanto's GT73 has been engineered to resist the herbicide glyphosate, similarly to a Monsanto maize that Efsa supported last December (EED 05/12/03). See press release and register of questions.
