EU electronics rules "exempt Deca-BDE"

The brominated flame retardant Deca-BDE is exempt from EU legal restrictions on hazardous substances used in electronics manufacture under the so-called RoHS directive, the European Commission has told Europe's bromine industry. The Bromine science and environment forum (BSEF) had sought the assurance in the light of what it called "confusion, and in certain cases misreporting" as to the chemical's status. Deca-BDE's long-term future will be decided by an ongoing EU risk assessment due for completion later this year (EED 09/12/03). See BSEF and Commission's letter.
