NGOs urge restraint on EU competitiveness drive
European environmental groups have urged EU industry ministers not to prioritise competitiveness over social and environmental concerns in the run-up to a meeting of the bloc's competitiveness council on Thursday. A succession of industry groups has pressed for exactly the opposite in recent weeks (EED 08/03/04). Brussels-based environmentalist coalition EEB called for a series of steps to re-equilibrate EU policies on sustainable development. Separately, WWF insisted that worries about the cost of implementing the EU Reach chemicals policy had been overblown. See statements by EEB and WWF.
