Belgium wrestles with biofuels support
Energy minister José Daras of Belgium's Wallonia region has warned the country's federal government not to over-subsidise biofuels in its bid to meet Kyoto protocol emission targets. Mr Daras said plans emerging from the agriculture ministry to cut duty on biofuels might contravene EU state aid rules and lead to a flood of imports from Brazil instead of promoting domestic production. Wallonia is consulting on a plan to apply green certificate trading to biofuel supply and does not want this to be jeopardised, he said (EED 10/03/04). See Mr Daras press release.
