Trittin seeks to wrest green power from states
German environment minister Jürgen Trittin has suggested that the nation's 16 states should give up their shared responsibility for lawmaking on nature and water protection issues. The current arrangements frequently caused "tonnes of overwork and unnecessary delays", he said at a conference. In the interests of boosting efficiency and aligning German rules with EU standards, the federal government should have sole responsibilitiy for all environmental lawmaking, he argued.
