Campaigners urge Romanian nuclear plant probe
Friends of the Earth (FoE) is to ask the European ombudsman to investigate alleged maladministration after the European Commission on Tuesday approved a €223.5m loan to upgrade Romania's Cernavoda nuclear power station. "We strongly suspect the stated reasons for making this loan are bogus...it appears the Commission is abusing its powers to support expansion of the nuclear industry," the NGO said. The European parliament's Green group described the loan as a "scandalous... direct subsidy for dangerous and costly nuclear power".
