German parliament approves renewables support
Germany's Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, has given final approval to revised rules on financial support for renewable energy (EED 06/11/03). Under the revised EEG law subsidies for offshore wind farms, solar power and biomass will increase, while those for inland and coastal wind farms will decrease. The government hopes the subsidies will help renewables account for 20% of total electricity consumption by 2020. The law increases the number of energy-intensive firms that will be spared the full effect of energy price hikes caused by the subsidies. See press release.
