French plan to boost eco-timber imports
By 2010, French public authorities should purchase only eco-certified tropical timber, the government said last week in an action plan for tropical forests. France is Europe's largest importer of tropical timber and one quarter of national consumption is by the public sector. Currenly only 1-2% of such purchases are of timber eco-certified through schemes such as FSC or PEFC. The proposals cut little ice with environmental groups, who criticised the plan as ineffective.
