EU-wide pesticides' MRLs one step closer

European Commission plans to harmonise across the bloc maximum residue levels (MRLs) of pesticides in food were given the go-ahead by EU agriculture ministers on Monday. After a second reading in the EU parliament, a regulation proposed by the Commission last year and introducing the new rules is expected to come into force in 2005 (EED 17/03/03). Under the new regime, MRLs will be harmonised at EU level after a phase-in period. The unified approach will "provide significant protection for consumers across Europe", said health commissioner David Byrne. See Commission's press release.
