Green farm policies urged on new EU states
EU accession and candidate countries must use financial aid available for environmental and rural development schemes under the bloc's common agricultural policy (Cap) to protect farmland from environmental degradation, the European environment agency said on Wednesday. The agency cited significant environmental risks from rising pesticide and fertiliser consumption and machinery use, plus abandonment of species-rich marginal farmland. Last June EU farm ministers adopted reforms to the Cap aimed at decoupling subsidies from production and redirecting some support towards environmental development schemes (EED 22/01/03).
