EU plans to ban toluene and trichlorobenzene
The European Commission has proposed an EU ban on trichlorobenzene (TCB) and restrictions on toluene following the completion of risk assessments on the substances. The law will amend the EU's marketing and use directive and needs approval from governments and MEPs. TCB would be permitted only as a chemical intermediate; toluene would be banned in adhesives and spray paints, uses which make up only a fraction of industrial toluene consumption. Industry representatives said the move was uncontentious and expected, and that market withdrawal had already begun. See European Commission.
