UK government urged to improve waste planning
A report on Wednesday by UK waste industry association Esa urges the government to improve its planning policy so that adequate infrastructure can be put in place to reach EU targets on landfill diversion. The UK government recently issued upbeat figures on the expansion of municipal waste recycling (EED 30/04/04). However, recycling alone will not enable the UK to overcome its reliance on landfilling, Esa warns. More incinerators are needed, and targets for the facilities required nationwide should be set by the government, not locally, it recommends. See press release and report.
