Costs and benefits of bio-products reviewed
The environmental pros and cons of substituting biological for fossil energy and materials are explored in the latest edition of peer-reviewed title, the Journal of industrial ecology. Bio-based industries are increasingly promoted as a "green" alternative to current systems (EED 10/09/02), but could also entail negative impacts. Articles consider aspects of production, use and disposal of bioplastics, biofuels and other plant-based industrial products. There are also profiles of four companies that manufacture bio-based products. The whole edition is available free-of-charge on the web. See special issue.
