US "ghost ships" get leave to stay in Britain
British regulators have declared that four redundant US navy vessels might be allowed to stay in the country and be scrapped. The announcement by Anglo-Welsh environment agency reverses a previous official position that the controversial "ghost ships" should towed back to America this spring (EED 10/11/03). After reviewing the case the agency has concluded that dismantling the vessels in the UK "could represent the best environmental option". It called for a national strategy to be developed on ship recycling saying that lessons needed to be learned. See press release and reviews.
