EU renewable energy assessment postponed
The European Commission on Wednesday put off the scheduled release of a report assessing Europe's performance on the 2001 renewable energy directive. A leaked draft last month infuriated renewables supporters by ruling out long-term targets for boosting the share of renewables in electricity consumption until more progress was made towards existing goals (EED 26/04/04). Renewables industry lobby Eref called the postponement "a disaster for Europe", but environmental group WWF suggested it might lead to EU energy commissioner Loyola de Palacio being forced to accept 2020 targets.
