Italian government urged to curb power demand
Italy's energy authority has urged the government to curb demand for electricity to avoid a repeat of the severe shortages experienced last summer. A massive blackout in September fuelled debate on how to bridge a current gap between electricity generation and demand (EED 29/09/03). The authority called for swift completion of draft legislation boosting energy efficiency, and prompt implementation of EU rules on labelling of domestic air-conditioning units. It recommended fiscal measures to support newer technology, including grants to replace old electric appliances. See press release and paper.
