Italy to support end-use energy efficiency
Italian electricity and gas suppliers are to be required to help their customers to save energy under two new government decrees. The laws set targets of reducing national electricity and gas consumption by 2.9m tonnes of oil equivalent and carbon dioxide emissions by 7m tonnes by 2006. The government is to announce details of incentives for energy suppliers at a later date, the environment ministry said. The decrees have strong parallels to a draft EU directive on energy efficiency and energy services currently on the table (EED 11/12/03). See Italian environment ministry.
