European beverage carton recycling hits 30%
The recycling rate for beverage cartons sold in EU-15 countries reached 30% in 2003, according to sector group Ace. Including incineration with energy recovery, the overall recovery rate reached 58%. Across the 25-member EU, the recycling rate was 28% and the recovery rate 53%. There is virtually no carton recycling in the EU's new members, but also much lower sales than in the EU-15. Growth in EU-15 recycling is being driven by countries with Green Dot collection systems. Italy and the UK remain at the bottom of the recycling league table. See press release.
