Italy to build even more new power stations
The Italian government is about to authorise construction of 24 new fossil fuel power stations, according to a draft decree leaked to environmental group Legambiente. Together with 29 plants authorised since the government streamlined procedures for new energy infrastructure two years ago (EED 15/02/02), they would increase national generating capacity by one-third, or 28,000 megawatts. Legambiente described the plan as "pure folly" and a clear sign that the government has no intention of promoting renewable sources and energy efficiency. See press release and leaked draft decree.
