Italian MPs urge wider definition of waste

An Italian parliamentary committee charged with investigating waste trafficking has approved a document urging the government to swiftly introduce new legislation harmonising the country's definition of waste with that in EU laws. This should reduce confusion for the Italian enforcement agencies and help curb illegal waste transport and disposal activities, the committee said. Its work on this topic was prompted two years ago by infringement proceedings initiated against Italy by the European Commission over a decree defining some kinds of materials as non-waste (EED 11/09/02).
