States miss EU strategic assessment deadline
Only nine of the 25 EU countries have met a legal deadline of Wednesday for transposing the 2001 directive on strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of land-use plans and programmes, according to the European Commission. All but three are new members of the bloc. The directive is expected to be an influential piece of legislation, also affecting agriculture, industry, energy, water management and tourism (EED 26/07/01). In a separate statement, the Commission noted that the transposition deadline for the EU's 2002 "noise" directive passed on 18 July. See press releases on SEA and noise directives.
