CO2-based EU car tax system moves closer
Stakeholders have been invited to comment on plans to simplify and "green" Europe's 25 passenger car tax systems. As outlined in a 2002 communication, the EU executive favours phasing out registration taxes in favour of a new tax structure based on CO2 emissions (EED 09/09/02). It claims already to have won support for this plan from the motor industry and consumer organisations. See press release and consultation website.
