End to "harmful" German farm subsidies urged
German environmental groups have called on the government to scrap "environmentally harmful" subsidies for diesel fuel in farming from its 2005 budget, which is to be approved this autumn. In a joint statement, three NGOs said the money would be better spent promoting biofuels as well as "energy and resource-efficient farms". The groups also called on the government to cut down on farmers' use of mineral fertilisers and pesticides by phasing in taxes on pesticides and surpluses of fertiliser. See press release.
