Germany applies first coat to new paint rules
Germany is moving in double quick time to implement new EU controls on the volatile organic compound (VOC) content of paints and varnishes. National rules were agreed by the government last week even though the relevant directive entered into force only at the end of April (EED 30/03/04), and the legal deadline for transposition is not until 30 October 2005. The rules have still to be approved by Germany's upper parliamentary house. They are expected to cut German VOC emissions by a few thousand tonnes per year. See press release.
